Manufaktura Culture-Trade-Entertainment Centre

| |

Manufaktura Culture-Trade-Entertainment Centre is one of the largest commercial centres in Poland and in Europe. It is situated in the heart of Lodz at the junction of Ogrodowa, Zachodnia, Karskiego and Drewnowska Streets. Its location is significant as it is here that Izrael Poznanski, one of the most famous 19th century entrepreneurs of Lodz, established one of the largest textile factories. Since 1971 the whole complex, with its adjacent palace, has been registered on the list of the city's most valuable industrial monuments. The factory complex is also known nationwide as Wladyslaw Reymont's ''The Promised Land'' was set here. The manufacturing activity ceased in 1997. Since then the whole complex has been refurbished. By mixing the old post-industrial architecture with a modern design, the post-industrial architectural complex has been revitalised to become one of the city's major attractions.

The complex, open in May 2006, covers the area of 27 ha. Most exteriors of the original buildings have been preserved, which adds special ambience to the place. The only exception is the main shopping gallery, made of steel and glass, which was built from scratch. The most elegant part of the Lodz Manufaktura is the former five-storey cotton spinning mill in Ogrodowa Street, which will be turned into a four-star hotel shortly.

Cultural role of the Manufaktura Centre

Manufaktura is not only a shopping but a cultural centre as well. It is here that one can contemplate on art, see artistic exhibitions and learn about the history of Lodz. The Park of Sculptures, with monumental carved figures, is part of the complex. There is also the Factory Museum which presents the life of Izrael Poznanski, the factory owner, and history of this site, the largest manufacturer of 19th -century Lodz. Soon the Art Museum will open in the Centrum Manufaktura where modern artists, from Poland and abroad, will display their works.
